In this 3 days Walk Wine experiences our goal is to make you aware of two of the most enigmatic Lisbon wine regions, “Colares” and “Carcavelos”, along with delicious local traditional food and their intimate restaurants, and also the fabulous UNESCO Cultural Landscape of Sintra.

The Colares vineyards are located in the most western point of Europe. This temperamental wines from the Old World are produced from some of the most unique castes varieties, like Ramisco and Malvasia. Unusual deep sandy soils, where even the phylloxera bug couldn’t thrive and the strong influence from the Atlantic with its salty sea winds, give to this wines a strong savory sea notes, being also very fragrant, fresh and balanced.

Considered by many winemakers as one of the best-fortified wines of Portugal, the Carcavelos Wine as it’s the origin in the 17th century. Arinto, Galego Dourado and Ratinho are the castes that constitute it and the proof of its high quality was the fact that, at the time, the King of Portugal, D. José, offered to the powerful Emperor of China two bottles of this wonderful wine.

We also make a point to include you in local communities, introduce you to our people so that you may experience our food, listen to our stories and share our secrets. We try hard to our walks always contemplate the mix between Natural Park – Communities – Cultural Park. Thus, we provide enriching experiences for our clients feel closer and more integrated.

Day 1 – The Route of Romanticism

Route of Romanticism

Carcavelos Wine

Our walk will start with a real-time journey, first, a thousand years of history in the visit to the renovated “Moorish Castle”. Step back further in time, we will see the remains of villages from the Neolithic period to about five thousand years ago.

Moving forward in the future, more precisely in the nineteenth century, our Romanticism route will take us into the heart of the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra – UNESCO World Heritage Centre” and its fabulous architectural monuments. We´ll start with the intimacy of the romantic botanical gardens of the “Parque da Pena” and his large Victorian lakes. Our participants will be amazed by the gorgeous architecture of the Pena Palace, the most important center of the Sintra Cultural Landscape. It will be here that we will have or a buffet lunch.

Afterwards the Pena Park visit we will have a wine experience in one of the oldest wine regions of Portugal, created in the year of 1752 by Sebastião Melo, Marquis of Pombal a kind of Prime Minister and a very powerful men who became famous for being the responsible for the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 terrible earthquake. This high quality fortified wine born in the Carcavelos Certified Wine Region and it will be here where we will visit the vineyards and two wineries. In the end, inside the original Winery, a beautiful building of the 19th century ordered to be built by the Marquis of Pombal, we will try 3 of this fine wines.

Optional Experience: After this interesting experience, the dinner will be in a restaurant located in a 19th-century building, which, through an excellent work of architecture has an excellent harmony between the past and the present. The quality of its food, the excellent service and the rare quality of its wine cellar are the best way to end this first day.

Day 2 – Sintra, and the Wines of the Old World

Colares wine

Quinta-da-Regaleira-Portugal

This day starts in the zone where Ramisco and Malvasia grapes, the base of the Colares wine, have their origin. Unusual deep sandy soils, where even the phylloxera bug couldn’t thrive and the strong influence from the Atlantic with its salty sea winds, give to this wines a strong savory sea notes, being also very fragrant, fresh and balanced.

Here we will visit one of the oldest and largest cellars in Portugal, where we will taste some of the wines produced from Malvasia and Ramisco castes, icons of this region, land of the wines of the “Old World”.

The lunch will be free and after, the amazing “Quinta da Regaleira”, will be our next stop. Its palace is surrounded by lush gardens, lakes, mysterious dens, and enigmatic buildings. All of these places hidden alchemical meanings, such as evoked by the Freemasons, Knights Templar, and Rosicrucian. Space is modeled in mixed tracings that evoke Romanesque architecture, Gothic, Renaissance and Manueline.

Optional Experience: The end of the day, and before dinner, will be free, where our participants can discover the beautiful and romantic town of Sintra, the world capital of the 19th century Romanticism movement and UNESCO World Heritage. The dinner will be in a traditional restaurant located in the town of Sintra Village. The cozy atmosphere, the home cooking food, and the good wine will be the perfect way to finish this day.

Day 3 – The Salty Wine, the Victorian Garden and the Fish

Monserrate

This walk starts in the most western vineyard in Europe. This local farm, built in the 18th century, stands between the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra sierra and its wines are characterized by their aging-potential, their character, and complexity. After visiting the vineyards and the winery, we will have a wine tasting where we will try some of the most enigmatic fine wines of Portugal. Thanks to the proximity of the sea, these wines have strong savory sea notes, being also very fragrant, fresh and balanced.

After this wine experience, the lunch will be free in the historical center of Sintra, where we will leave our travelers.

Our afternoon will be filled with a visit to “Monserrate”, which is one of the most beautiful creations of the Romanticism landscape, as well as it´s a very beautiful palace. Immortalized by Lord Byron, Monserrate is one of the most famous and exotic Europe “Victorian” gardens.

With the company of the Atlantic and a beautiful sunset, the day will finish with a delicious grilled fresh fish and a white wine with a fruity flavor in Adraga Restaurant, considered by Sergi Arola (2 Michelin stars), one of the most known Chefs in the world, as “the best beach fish restaurant in the world”.

Accommodations

 

Although the accommodations aren’t included in our base price (above), we consider that possibility as an extra:

  • We recommend a hotel/guest house/hostel (several possibilities) according to a previous briefing of the client preferences. We book the chosen hotel and we handle all process. The final proposal will include accommodations has an extra.

Booking Confirmation / Payment

 

Following your contact, you’ll receive from us a confirmation email informing us that we still have availability for the pack you want (if available). The payment can be done by PayPal (click on the button on the bottom of our website home page) or Bank Transfer. In this last option, you will receive our bank identification account for which should be made the transfer of the value. For the bank transfer payment from abroad, please ensure that all bank and other charges on the transaction are paid at your end so that the correct amount (in Euros) is received by us. Once we have the booking confirmation transaction confirmed, we will send you an email with a Tour Booking Agreement and a receipt concerning the paid amount.

Schedule of payments:

  • 30% of the total amount to confirm the booking
  • Final payment is due 30 days prior to the activity date

Cancellations / Changes

 

Since the Walk Hike Portugal develops an outdoor activity, these are exposed to the climatic/environmental conditions and constraints that these impose. Thus, the Walk Hike Portugal reserves the right to change itineraries or activities, if weather conditions may threaten our customer’s safety, as well as our team members. Below are some examples of weather / environmental condition that may or not allow our walks or part of them:

  • Torrential rains
  • Strong thunderstorms
  • Strong winds
  • Landslide
  • Falling trees
  • Fires
  • Floods
  • Earthquakes
  • Sea storms

In these cases, the walks will be run on another date to match or replaced by another, if possible. If the cancellation of the tour is an inevitability, either because the persistence of weather phenomena / environmental mentioned above, or customers inability to schedule, we will refund 75% of the amount paid, provided that cancellation occurs within 24 hours before the beginning of the purchased holiday pack, except all the costs with accommodation, flights or any other costs already paid by Walk Hike Portugal. The remaining 25% will be for Walk Hike Portugal pay the logistics/bookings costs to imply in all our walks.

In case the reason is due to withdrawal by customers, Walk Hike Portugal returns 100% of the amount paid provided that it occurs until 60 days before the tour date. If the withdrawal occurs until 45 days before the tour date we will refund 75% of the amount paid. If the withdrawal occurs until 30 days before the tour we will refund 50% of the amount paid. If the withdrawal occurs later than 30 days before the tour we will not refund any of the amount paid. All these refunds don’t include the costs with accommodations, flights, or any other costs already paid by Walk Hike Portugal.

If the client does not arrive at the appointed day, the Walk Hike Portugal disclaims any responsibility for non-performance all activities considered in the program booked by the customer, as well as the return of any amount for the money already paid by the customer. Walk Hike Portugal also reserves the right to reschedule all program of activities of the booked program tour, according to what they understand to be the most viable option.

This program requires a minimum of 4 participants (beyond the guides). If this number it won´t be reached the Walk Hike Portugal reserves the right for not doing the program. If so, the amount of the 30% paid for the booking confirmation will be returned, in full.
